Abstract:   (12 Views)
Objective: Unsustainable urban development has led to the creation of identity-less urban fabrics. In traditional Iranian architecture, the entrance portal of houses, in addition to its functional role in controlling access, has always been an identity-defining element that introduces the building. Field evidence shows that many Pahlavi-era portals in the old fabric of Zabol are being demolished or undergoing drastic changes. The present study, while documenting the typology of these elements, takes a step towards recovering indigenous design principles and restoring architectural identity.
Method: This research is applied in nature and descriptive-analytical in method. The statistical population of the study includes all residential portals in the old fabric of Zabol, of which 61 samples were identified and recorded using a complete enumeration method. The data collection process was based on field surveys, photographic documentation, and the completion of checklist forms to extract quantitative and qualitative indicators. Finally, the analysis of quantitative data was conducted through descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage), while qualitative data analysis was carried out using content analysis, comparative comparison, and formal typology.
Results: The research classification criteria were formulated based on six physical-functional indicators, including: the physical protrusion of the portal, the form of the lintel/threshold top, the width of the portal, side columns of the portal, the roofline (parapet) level relative to the wall, and the side gutters of the portal. Through the synthesis of these indicators, a total of 17 distinct types were identified among the Pahlavi-era portals of Zabol city; these types, in fact, explain the final architectural pattern of entrance portals of this period in the city of Zabol.
Conclusions: The findings of this research identify the 45-degree chamfer pattern as the fundamental core of architectural identity in the portals of Zabol, and emphasize that revisiting and applying these principles can play a key role in formulating contemporary design criteria and revitalizing urban identity.
