Impact of Thermal Behavior on Energy Demand in Tehran's Residential Apartments

Objective: With increasing energy demand in the building sector and the growing impacts of climate change, attention to factors influencing energy demand in buildings has become increasingly vital. Occupant behavior significantly impacts the reduction or increase in building energy demand. This research aims to investigate the role of thermal behavior on energy demand for achieving thermal comfort conditions to adapt to climate change.
Method: This research adopts a quantitative approach, using field surveys and questionnaires regarding thermal comfort and prioritizing thermal behaviors. Data analysis involved descriptive, inferential, and correlational statistical methods.
Results: According to the ASHRAE standard, 49% of individuals prefer neutral temperatures, and 90% of respondents fall within the comfort range. The neutral temperature identified in this study is 23.9°C, with an acceptable temperature range of 19°C to 28.8°C for occupants. Additionally, 59% of individuals prefer thermally neutral conditions, 27% prefer warmer environments, and 14% prefer cooler environments. The primary behavioral priorities identified were the use of heating systems, wearing warmer clothing, and moving to warmer spaces, emphasizing the role of reactive behaviors in modulating energy demand to achieve thermal comfort.
Conclusions: The broader thermal comfort range compared to existing standards indicates the substantial impact of occupant thermal behavior on energy demand. Hence, identifying adaptation opportunities to engage occupants actively for climate adaptability and resilience against future temperature conditions is essential.
